TV film? about dogfight

Does anyone know about a film or tv programme about a german ex POW who retrieves his crashed ME109? and rebuilds it then ends up in a dogfight with the spitfire pilot who shot him down? It's driving me mad as my mates are getting worried about my sanity, and i'm beginning to believe i made it up myself!

I don't know about a film, but I can definitly remember reading a book with this theme, unfortunatly it was some years ago and I can't remember the title or author. I vaguely remember that the action took place in the US I think starting out on the set of a war film and bulding up to a real dogfight
