2a.maths.the earth is 8,000 miles in diameter,calculate how many six foot lengths of woolworths tinsel you would need to wrap up the world for xmas. who would you give it to?

Answering the facts of your question, 7,040,000 but
Woolworths is closed for good
the world is actually 7,962.41 miles in diamter
and the six foot lengths would be no good because they would need joining together, so you would need much more lengths (if Woolies still existed)
I couldnt give it to anybody, cos they would be standing on it.

8000 miles = 8000 x 1760 = 14080000 yards times 3 for feet = 42240000 feet divide by 6 = 7040000 lengths needed

To find out the circumference you need to do twice pie x radius.
You have diameter , so half that is radius which is 4000miles. x 5680 for feet.
Pie (short for Pythagorus who wrote the theorem) is 3.1412 (if my memory serves right).
so 2 x 3.1412 x 4000 x 5680
Then to find the number of lengths of tinsel divide by 6.
Calculator Slinky. You do the maths this time!

oh to hang wit!h tinsel, just use wrapping paper but it would have to be 0.0000005mm thick and folded at least 50 times

radius x 2 x pi is exactly the same as diameter x pi and means at least one less calculation in this case as diameter has been given

Hi puternut. Fair comment. I was trying to take Slinky through it step by step as she said she was still confused. I did realise at the time I could dispense with radius (which is the formula I know) but left it in.. I dont know why we bothered really as it doesnt look like she is that interested.
