Does anyone know the names of the newspapers that were in use in 1882 in Brighton.  I am looking for an obituary of my Gt, Gt, Grandad who was only 36 when he died.  Hope someone can help.  Thanks

I think the Evening Argus was around as well as the Brighton and Hove Gazette which is now defunct.

There should be county archives for Sussex (sorry, can't remember off top of my head if Brighton is East or West ...) which would almost certainly include copies of newspapers. Is Brighton the county town ?? ......

In Herts, the county archives are held at county hall in the county town of Hertford ! I did quite a lot of research for my degree there years ago, including obtaining old papers .... the staff there were really helpful and it was easy to find what I wanted. You can't just walk in off the street into the archives but it's very easy to obtain a "reader's" pass which allows you access for a certain period of time.

Suggest you check the phone book, or the website for the council, which should tell you where the archives are located and take it from there.

Thanks folks, thats very helpful.  I'm going to organise a trip down to Brighton to continue my searches (I've got a reader's pass from my local research 'up north').  I've found the website for the county archives and will be contacting them next week.  Thanks for the paper names, should be copies held in the libraries.
The Argus started in 1880, so it was just around then. There was also the Brighton Herald then too. Other old newspapers then were the Brighton Guardian and the Brighton Examiner . When I was growing up, I never thought it strange that a town the size of Brighton could support three newspapers (the Guardian and Examiner had long gone by then) but looking back, it was incredible.
The local library is very helpful and I''m sure you'll find what you want. Gilli, Brighton is in East Sussex and it's not the county town; Lewes is.
