Try winmx, no ads or pop-ups, but bear in mind the viruses (if any) will probably be in the files that you download and not in the actual programme. Make sure you have got some decent anti-virus stuff installed and you should be OK.

personally,wherever possible i try to avoid downloading individual songs using progs like winmx,kazaalite & imesh as there are a lot of idiots who post infected files and also a lot more encoded files are appearing in an effort to discourage people from dl'ing.

i use bit torrent - you do have to dl a small piece of software but after that it works really well and i have not had one dodgy file in all the albums i have dl'ed
