i'm sure this has been asked before - but which is the best site for downloading music? Is it legal to share music nowadays? I bl00dy hate itunes!

No it is not legal to share music nowadays.People are being prosecuted for downloading copyrighted material from these peer to peer sites a lot more frequently.
This is a rather extreme example but the most recent I could find:
