Lurch =The losing position of a cribbage player who scores 30 points or less to the winner's 61

and also means stagger
To be left in the lurch implies having no support .
that's right swannbaker, I meant to say that to leave in the lurch originates from the cribbage game, if I am not mistaken.

Thanks to you all!!! After I posted the question "left in the lurch" came to me. I have played cribbage but never heard the term used there but I am certain you are all correct.
