Does a garantor need to be british?

My father wants to be my garantor in a new flat i move into. But they say he needs to be british. we have never heard such a statement. My father is spanish and has lived and worked in this country for over 40 years? he has been my garantor in past, so why is this happening now/

What is your father being asked to guarantee?
I imagine that the company can make any conditionsd they choose regarding the acceptability of guarantors.

At the end of the day, it is entirely up to the company requesting a guarantor, what the qualifications to be one are. I can't see what you can do about it other than get someone else to stand guarantor.

There's no legal requirement that a guarantor here be British.Chances are that this body has some general rule based upon the difficulty of enforcing the guarantee abroad. A foreigner may be out of the jurisdiction, as may their assets, when a guarantee is to be enforced.
