I don't know, but considering the noise they make I think a group of hens should be called a "cackle".

i would agree with a cackle of hens, it was my initial inkling. Also possibly a flock.
The oxford english dictionary classification of groups of animals states.... "a brood, (dial.) cletch or clutch, or 'peep of chickens"

FLOCK but any way, CACKLE is more catchy

The real name is A Brood of Hens, i know it sounds silly but it is true ....
