Why does corn on the cob cost more?

Why is it that corn on the cob costs more per peice of sweetcorn than a large bag/tin of sweetcorn? I thought they were grown in the same way? meaning it would surely cost more to remove the sweetcorn from the cob?

Good point, and why does carrots on the green cost more- when it must surely cost more to get the green stalks cut off?!?!!?

Maybe it's one of them nature things. People think they are getting a less tampered-with item, and it is therefore healthier....

I suppose there could be a slight variation due to packaging, as it would cost more to transport the cobs per bit of sweetcorn than it would a bag of sweetcorn

i guess it could also be that when growing sweetcorn for use in bags or tins not all the sweetcorn on the cob has to be perfect, as you can leave the bad bits out, wherewas when growing corn to sell on the cob everybit must be up to a good quality?

I would think it has a lot to do with care in handling fresh produce, as opposed to that of canned. Also, the supply of canned veggies is not seasonally affected like that of fresh produce. Or maybe I just made all that up....makes since to me though.

A good place to ask why anyone is buying corn on the cob anyway ?  As soon as cobs are cut, the sugar begins to turn to starch, and the flavour deteriorates. I read once that the only way to eat sweetcorn is to grow it yourself and have a saucepan of water boiling at the ready for when you cut the cob. I tried it and it's true - the taste is incomparably better than bought, old, cobs.  The next best thing is to buy it frozen; the supplier should have harvested and frozen it very soon after picking.

I think you will find it is a different type of corn for 'Sweetcorn' than for 'Corn-on-the-cob'.
