Could anyone please tell me the colour of pure water? I'm sure I heard that in large enough volumes it 'does have a blue tint and this explains the colour of the sea. The story of it just being the reflection of the sky is a myth. I suppose I'm asking on both counts here, both pure water in large volumes, and the ocean. A thousand thanks.
The relection of the sky has a lot more to do with the colour of the sea than the true colour of the water in the sea. Notice how the colour of the sea changes when the sky is cloudy (white) or cloudy (grey) or when the sky is bright blue. It's not a myth. When you look down from above, shallow water looks much bluer than deep water, because you are getting some reflection back from the (almost) white sand on the sea bed.
