What are the bacteria in Actimel and similar 'friendly bacteria' drinks actually supposed to do?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.It's just that there are good and bad bacteria that live in the gut, and we can help our digestion etc by having more of the good ones! When taken in EXCESS, I mean millions, it has shown to really improve diseases such as inflammatory bowel diseasem, which has no known cause or cure. Things like anti-biotics will kill off ALL bacteria in the gut, good and bad, so you are basically just topping up the good ones.
Having said that, it's a well known fact that there are not enough good bacteria in a bottle to actually make any real difference.
It's not so much how many bottles- you would be drinking all the milk and sugar too. You can get probiotics in "bulk" but I think tests are still being done. I don't believe for a minute that actimel etc actually makes anyone feel better. You'd be better off just doing a detox or giving up alcohol for a bit!
