In the meantime get to all the available science museums in the UK - many of which are free - and sites such as Jodrell Bank so your knowledge is kept up to date, and familiarise yourself with the European Space Programme: http://www.esa.int/esaCP/index.html
It's not just Americans who deal with space flights.
And dont forget when you are sitting atop of a saturn rocket looking out over Cape Canaveral as the countdown starts, its comforting to know that everything you can see has been built by the lowest bidder...bon voyage...
I have been to the USA a number of times, both on business and for holiday, and I find the people generally wonderful, friendly and helpful (much more so than most UK based people).
The country is amazing, with a wide range of things to see and do.
I bet if she went there on holiday she would love it.
