holidays while on job seekers

how does it stand when somebody wants to have a weeks holiday but falls on the week that person is due to sign on. are there any consessions

then you can't sign on, you are not available for work, and if overseas I believe you have to stop claiming

Can we cut this person some slack. They may be like i was once. Had a job, booked and paid for holiday and then made redundant.

People seem to forget that signing on isnt just about job seekers allowance its also about paying your NI or stamp.

Just go and see them and explain, you wont be the only one, i think i just went in on a different day

Nope there are no concessions, I have just registered for JSA and asked this question. If you go on holiday within the UK that is ok but if you go abroard you have to sign off before you go and then do a rapid resign when you get back, and I think after the resign they said you lose the first 3 days again.
No exceptions they told me, I explained that with the internet now it was possible to search fora vacancy from pretty much anywhere int he world, but their reply was that if you are abroad and a job offer comes up you cannot start it, I gave up the debate then as i know of no job that would need an immediate start if it is still at the advertising stage.

Just to correct Dot's post:
While there's a three day qualifying period when first signing for JSA, it's reduced to just one day under the 'rapid reclaim' system.

I once made the mistake of telling a Jobcentre employee that I was taking a day trip abroad, on a Sunday. I pointed out that I'd be happy to cancel that day trip if I was notified of any work for that Sunday up until the time I went to bed on the Saturday, but he still insisted that I had to sign off JSA and then sign back on again (which involved attending another interview).

Cor how things have changed!!

When my (now ex)partner was unemployed and we went on holiday, we simply said that he was away and they signed him on for when he was back.

At the end of the day, just because he was unemployed and seeking work does not mean that he cant afford a holiday with his partner... or indeed have savings that would afford a holiday.

I know there are certain rules to be enforced, but surely th unemployed are still allowed holiday rights - 4 weeks a years like us employed????

no they're not......if they are getting job seekers allowance they should be job seeking.....they shouldn't get a penny for the time they are away....

well I signed on for the first time today and my little grey booklet was full apart from 3 lines and the woman nearly dropped off her seat!!!! I told her I had an offer of a job for October and that I intended taking it if nothing else came up before then and she was fine!!! Now all they need to do is sort my actual claim out!!! It's been sonce the 9th August and they won;t even be looking at it til at least Thursday next week, I asked what would have happened if I had kids to feed and had no money and the reply was 'well everyone is in the same boat, noone has any money'!!!! How unprofessional and downright rude!!! At least I hget my redundancy payment tomorrow, yayyyyy.

What happens then if you go abroad to seek work? Go for an interview? Walk from shop to shop and bar to bar?

The rules are:~
14 days holiday a year if on JSA.
JSA paid if holiday in UK, but must be willing to return to Job Centre if suitable vacancy/interview comes up.(In preactice,very rarely, if ever done)
However:~
IF holidaying abroad,then scenario as Chris says applies.

The last time I signed on, a good few years ago I admit, I did have a holiday booked and paid for. The snotty job seeker woman advised me (well told me really) that my payment would stop and I'd have to re-apply on my return.

Anyhoo, I stuck to my guns and told her that I wasn't prepared to cancel my holiday, thus losing my deposit, and that as I was holidaying in the UK anyway that i'd continue to look for work while camping. I won in the end :-)
