anyone know how to stop a kit sharpening her  claws on leather. I,ve tried the usual deterents, eg. scooting her with a water pistol and even tried scratching my own nails on a kitty scratching board, but wee vandella just gives me a malevolent stare, help!

rub orange oil onto arms of suite , i used pledge oil on advice fromleather manufacturer and worked a treat

My cat completely destroyed my brand new leather armchair before I noticed (it was in a dark corner). My grandmother suggests killing the kitten, but I tend to think that's a bit extreme!

Couple of suggestions:
Double sided sticky tape stops cats scratching - they don't like the stickiness.
They also don't like tin foil, so maybe some of that?
You only need to stop them for a few days, and they should find somewhere else to scratch, so don't worry that you'll be stuck with bits of tin foil everywhere!

If nothing else works, do what I did - get a large cat blanket / ordinary blanket and drape it over the chair. My cat now 'owns' the chair she destroyed but since I covered it with a blanket, she won't sctratch it. And we've succeeded in teaching her that she mustn't jump on any other furniture except that chair.

If you haven't got a scratching post, get one - it could be as simple as that.

Pick her up and give her a little tap on her bottom (Not hard enough to hurt her, but cats hate being humiliated) Then put her down somewhere away from where shes scratching

Honest it works-we've got two cats and when they were small this is what we did. They are now 5 and 7 and very well behaved.  btw what a lovely name for a cat

put the scratching post (i think a post is better than a board because cats tend to stretch at same time as sharpening) in front of where she attacking to sofa. each time she goes for the sofa, just pick her up and put her in front of the post again.

if that fails then the Orange oil that Callisto suggested is a good option.
