OK, 33d driving me nuts. I have ?N?E?R?G?L and assume last three are GAL (Gaul without U), but all I can come up with is INTERREGAL (in + terre + gaul without u), and I can't find that in any dictionary.
Phew! Thank you, now I can get on with enjoying the rest of my Bank Holiday weekend (though clearly I could do well to spend some of it brushing up my history). Isn't it funny how sometimes a clue (46d in this case) will fox you however many times you run through the options? Wood for the trees and all that.
