How long does a court have to try a case?

I was arrested at the beginning of November 2008, and the case has still not gone to trial, how long do they have to take me to court before the case is thrown out? Because surely the incident cannot be fresh in the memories of the alleged victims or witnesses. Is there any sort of Time out period?

There is no time limit. A court could try you and find you guilty for any offence; it doesnot matter how long ago the offence was committed. Although obviously the longer it takes to bring to trial the more likely it is the case will be dropped for various reasons - but that is up to the CPS.

Why are people held in prison on remand for months or even years, and then they are found not guilty at trial?

Because the system is overloaded and very inefficient.
