Hi am trying to trace Clara Sutcliff - she is listed on the1851 census as wife born 1828c aged 23, there is a Joseph Sutcliff on there listed as a lodger and I was presuming these were married but I can't find a marriage for them. However I did find a marriage for Joseph to Eliza Cox in 1848. I'm confused - who is Clara and who was she married to. Any help appreciated

Was Joseph recorded as married in the '51? A lodger lived at the same address but did not share meals with the family, a boarder did and would usually be a member of the family. As a rule anyway. Being as the name is Sutcliffe is this family anywhere near Todmorden/West Riding BTW?
Joseph Sutcliffe and his wife Eliza were both born in Alfreton according to later returns, Have you looked at the original entry or just on the transcribed index? I think possibly the christian name Eliza has been mis-transcribed as Clara. Eliza Cox was born in Alfreton May 1827, illegitimate daughter of Ann Cox. What is 'Clara's place of birth on the 1851?
Joseph and his sister Mary Ann were both born Alfreton I think, children of Stephen and mary Sutcliffe?
Was Mary Ann the Mary Ann Howard Suttliff bap 5 nov 1826? and Joseph Howard Suttliff bap 22 mar 1827?
If so their mother was probably Mary Bacon who married Stephen Sutcliffe 17 May 1824 in Alfreton.

I knew I could rely on you Dot. How do you find the parents of children? I had looked at the original census and it does state Clara! I did find a death for Clara in Oct/Nove/Dec 1862 which I thought could be a possible!! You are right about Joseph and Mary Ann being the children of Stephen and Mary.
Not sure about the Mary Ann Howard Sutcliffe and Joseph Howard thing - where did you find that? Will have to look into that a bit deeper but the dates do match.
You are a godsend Dot.
Thank you for taking the time to help me it is appreciated.

i used the International Genealogical Index (IGI) on this site:
familysearch.org
If you look on the left of the site it lists various sources including the IGI.
In the search box I typed Jospeh Sutcliffe, for event I selected christening and then I selected Derbyshire, and then I just clicked on each one in the list looking for the best match to known info, did the same with Mary Ann and with Eliza Cox. You can put in an approx birth date which narrows down your search.
On the IGI you can search hundreds of christenings and marriages from every county, as long as the Parish where the event took place has had it;s registers transcribed and included in the index.
