This has caused a heated debate in our office today..........is it right that the prize money on offer for women at Wimbledon is less than for men?

Can't say I have an opinion on this to be honest - great game to play but, in my opinion, bloody awful to watch - but can see both sides of the debate (on the one hand equality between the sexes, on the other the men play more sets).

jno it is not sexist at all and has very little to o with the amount of sets they play.

Put it this way, if you were the MD of a company and you had two salesman working for you. One of them brings in twice as much money to your company than the other. Which one would you reward financially?? Sex has nothing to do with it.

Everyone has missed the point here. Players are not PAID for playing at Wimbledon. They enter a competition for which there is prize money. It is entirely up to the All England Club to decide how much prize money is available for each of the competitions.
And the amount of prize money available (as decided by the All England Club) is dictated by how much money the sport generates. Men's tennis generates more money from all available channels than womens. Men therefore win more money than women.

Football generates more money than sponsored piggyback tiddlywinks. Ergo, prize money in football is higher...

What argument is there to counter this : I think I'm yet to hear one.
Simple supply and demand, the higher the public viewing demand for something the more you get paid for it as a profession, that is what footballers get loads as it is such a popular sport. I would much rather watch men running around but i am a woman afterall hee hee

pertinently, the men have to carry more balls.

they must be knackered...

as it were.

I think prize money should be equal  !!!!!

Open Competition  (best of 5 sets)....both sexes... one trophy,  one lot of prize money,   What would happen to the womans game.  They would have to do ALL there grunting in bed.....lol....
