Take her out for a meal --that way one of you will enjoy a tasty meal.
Don' t agonise about a present , hard to please ==ungracious in my book.
Has she never heard of the thought counting?

that's a little harsh brenda - i'm hard to buy for but its only cos when i want something i go out and get it and if people ask me what i want i'm usually left going errrrrr errrrrr because i genuinely can't think of anything. my family and friends all know if they want to buy me something then they just get me an amazon gift cert. failing that going out for a beer or two works just as well!

My brother would probably say the same about me because he'd find it difficult, but I'm not hard to please. I really apprecaite things with a bit of thought or meaning. What about a fave pic of your sisters kids/pets/partner whatever put on to canvas, or a framed meaningful poem. I was given a white rose called "Life begins at 40" for my 40th and whenever i see it i remember who gave me it. IF she likes her garden then i expect a plant of some description would be a welcome addition, or a big pot that she can put a specimen plant in. Gift vouchers are always great..amazon, crocus, etc etc, and so are vouchers for beauty treatments at a local salon or a spa if you are feeling more generous. A meal out or tickets to a concert, theatre, event. What about membership to the national trust or similar. Make some vouchers yourself redeemable for babysitting, car washing, lawn mowing, hoovering, decorating, ironing. Get her a case of nice wine, or a bottle of champers with some nice glasses. A fake fur throw, luxury bath products, a nice Radley purse, buy her a kitten.Take her out for the day
I think that as you reach a certain age, presents can be more of a problem than a pleasure, and I don't mean that to sound ungrateful.
After many years of trying to buy meaningful pressies, and getting negative feedback, I decided that I'd only buy 'consumable' pressies ..... chocs, perfume, toiletries, booze, that sort of thing. Some folk would call that boring, but personally I like the idea. Nowadays folk mostly go out and buy the stuff they really want anyway.

thanks everybody for your answers. she lost her only son 5 years ago and yes she is ungracious so I have decided to buy practical - ie cigarettes which cost me £56 and swartz lighter and a skirt and blouse. Believe it or not she wont like anything so I am not going to get stressed because no matter what I get she does hurt me sometimes by her comments.
