Word and excel attachments

When I got my laptop i had to sign up on windows fir a 3 month free trial of word and excel. After the 3 months i could not use them anymore but if i was sent an email with an attachment i could always open it. My laptop broke recently and it was repaired with a new hard drive installed. Now when i receine emails with attchments i cannot open them. Is there a way of viewing attchments without purchasing word and excel??? Many thanks, I hope that all makes sense!!
