I am not entirely sure of the value of this. The point about the recently announced national programme for schoolgirls is to attempt to vaccinate girls prior to sexual activity - If one is already sexually active, then there is a chance ( about 1 in 10 for women in their 20s) that they have already been infected with HPV.
The vaccines currently on offer protect against HPV 16 and 18, which together constitute around 70% of all HPV cases.
Should you decide to go ahead and get the vaccine, you also need to understand that we do not have a diagnostic test for HPV as yet - the only thing we can screen for is the most serious effect of the virus (cancer of the cervix), and that is done by checking for abnormal cells in the smear test - so don't abandon the smear test if you have the vaccine ; This is really important.
