I think it depends on which God one believes in. I believe in 'God' the Creator, which differs to the one portrayed in the Bible !

The most common form of this is "Why don't you believe in God? If you're wrong and he doesn't exist you don't lose anythng, but if you're right and you didn't believe you're damned to Hell - what have you got to lose"

This is a false dichotomy - it assumes there are only 2 possibilities a Christian God exists or doesn't.

Perhaps one of the dozens of others exists - then our Christian friend is sent to hell for believing in the wrong God.

Perhaps God will damn me for trying to trick him with a fake belief whereas he might have saved me for liking a good and sincere life

Therefore your best bet is to follow your concience, live a generally good life and not be dragged into superstitious claptrap.
