Queen surname ~ Windsor (Royal Family at time of Edward VII,in WW1,changed to Windsor from Saxe Coburg Gotha).Technically of course she should have taken her Husband's surname!
Prince Phillip surname Mountbatten (taken from Uncle Lord Mountbatten) his (Phillip's) Father was an Oldenburg.(Greek/Danish descent)
Prince Charles ~ Mountbatten ~ Windsor (as of order in Council 1960) previously only Windsor
Princess Anne ~ Mountbatten ~ Windsor (as above)previously only Windsor.
Prince Andrew ~ Mountbatten (as above)
Prince Edward ~ Mountbatten (as above)
It stated in the same order in Council, that any children of Male Heirs of The Queen would be solely Mountbatten also.
This means William,Harry and the children of Andrew and Edward are solely Mountbatten.William is known as William Wales as a courtesy title,to indicate who's son he is.
The Queen insituted this order in council in 1960 on the birth of her 3rd Child (Andrew). When her first two children were born her Father (George VI) was still alive, and it seems she did not wish to upset him by calling her children Mountbatten.
So sorry if this is a bit complicated!
