Well prison didn't do Ronnie Biggs much harm & he now appears better off than some law abiding OAP's:

It is said that those two thuglet brothers who attacked the two young lads in Doncaster earlier this year, set out to do so because their elder brother (imprisoned himself) said how soft the jails of Britain are, and how his brothers would get themselves a better life and better standard of living in a youth offender's hostel or secure unit than they would ever do 'on the outside'. And indeed they will - they will have better education, their every wish catered for and more luxuries than their mother would be able to provide.

Someone said to me once that they learnt how to commit burglary properly when they were sent to prison! U.K prisons are soft compared to the rest of the world. But it's all Human Rights Act and stuff, which does have a point for some prisoners, although bring back hanging for the rest! Have a good day.
