What damage will the release of the Lockerbie bomber do?
With the Septics apoplectic with the Sweaties and boycotting British goods etc, was it a mistake to let the guy out? Will the Scot government survive this?

Remember "Freedom Fries"?
I can see the point of view of the Scottish minister - if there's set procedures it would be wrong to override them in this case because of political pressure.
But I don't agree because this was always a special case - trial in Holland etc.
But we certainly shouldn't make internal decision based on whether the Americans would approve or not!

I don't believe he was released for the reasons that the Scots gave. One day the truth will come out.
I'm convinced the British government wanted him released to stop the appeal going through. However I can't work out what pressure they could exert to make it happen.
They must have had something on the SNP, and that justice minister to force it.

It will do no damage.
The Scottish are world leaders in oil extracting technologies, and Libya has a lot of oil to extract. Expect Scottish companies to sign juicy contracts with Libya, and expect a boost to the Scottish economy.
Megrahi is probably innocent, and may even clear his name one day. The Americans are making a fuss, but they were instrumental is shifting the blame from the real culprits in Iran, and implicating Libya because it was politically more expedient to do so at the time.
There are suggestions that the CIA planted some of the evidence, and that could be embarrassing for the US if Megrahi does prove to be innocent.
This is obviously not playing well in the US, but other nations welcome it.

I remember someone telling me once, give any bad or damaging news 9 days and people will forget about it....Also the Labour party policy under Tony Blair started the saying "It`s happened let`s move on"
I totally disagree with forgetting about it and moving on but that is the fact of life lately with anything in connection with government.
In the not too distant past Ministers were fiddling their expenses, they`ve moved on, oh and I honestly can`t remember the other damaging and bad news! 9 days have past.
By the end of this week we`ll all be saying "Lockerbie released bomber, oh yes I seem to remember something about it now you mention it".

What is the alternative to governing ourselves?
Let the Americans decide what we can and cannot do, and do nothing that is good for Britain that might upset the American public?
Get real Geezer, the US have their interests and we have ours. Mostly they are the same thing, but occasionally, as in this case, they will differ. We should not tailor our policies to suit any other country other than our own.
We will get lots of oil contracts in Libya for British companies and that can only be a good thing for British jobs, and the nation as a whole.
