im sorry for the icky nature of this question, but i have just hoiked up some grey/back bits of phlegm. I am a bit concerned! However, i went to the hospital last week as i also had blood in my phlegm -they did some x- rays and my chest and face looked fine, but the doctor thought it might be sinus related or a burst blood vessel. I am also quite a heavy smoker and wondered if the black bits might be related to that, or to do with sinus. Anyone experienced this before or have any advice? Thankyou xx

3bis, My hubby gets the same. He has sinus problems and is also a smoker. His chest x ray showed up clear but the docs told him its the ciggies causing the black phlegm. He gave them up for 14 months but sadly went back on them so now he's back to "Cough,splutter,cough.spit". Oh dear.
Go back to your GP. I assume you did a sputum sample and the results were inconclusive, hence the xray. Ask for more tests. Keep persevering
