found dead - run over. Why do they have four extra breathing holes, besides nostrils? Two near ears and two above nostril, near eyes. Y do they have canine teeth - thought they were veggies?

They are fairly common in the New Forest and I have heard that they will attack dogs using their tusks but ther used to be quite a tame on where I walked my dog who would join us for part of the walk...the dog never bothered him and he never bothered the dog
The ' extra breathing holes' aren't breathing holes but scent glands. Muntjac have clearly visible facial scent glands. The upper pair are the frontal glands and the lower pair are the sub-orbital glands. Deer use scent for various purposes but principally in marking territory and to recognise each other ( since each deer has its own unique scent)
No tusks or antlers? Then it's a doe , a female, (or its a fawn). She has no horns/ antlers but tufts and a small lump where the horns would be. The buck, the male, has very short 'horns' for antlers and a pair of curved, elongated front teeth ( 'tusks'). The bucks use these in fighting with each other. The buck has a very marked, deep, V mark on his face, which clinches identification.
