I have no idea who they belong to - there are about 20 of them. Do I have a duty to find the owner and if I don\'t, could the owner subsequently accuse me of trying to steal them!

Best thing to do is ring the Police and there should be Identity Markings on them.
Don't have Lamb for dinner Today ! :-)
Put a notice on your fence "Grazing charge £20pd per head".

No payment - the livestock become yours! Sell but keep receipts in case of legal action.
I agree with redman, let the police deal with it.
We often have sheep that stray onto our meadow.I ring the police, and if they get snotty, and say they can do nothing, reply "Well, as they are not mine I shall put them back on the road where they obviously came from. But you will be responsible if they cause a road accident"
You have never seen police move so fast.
The owner is responsible for making sure that his sheep are securely enclosed in their surroundings. As a previous poster said, the local farmers will have their own special marking systems and should be able to identify. Maybe you could put a notice in the local shop or paper - someone will come looking for them. A good farmer should be out every day anyhow checking on their stock.
As long as they are not doing anything to the detriment of your property let them cut the grass for you! If you eventually are contacted there may be a reward in it....................Sunday roast maybe ;-)
