Think like an acoholic - one day at a time. Pick a date, and before you go to bed that night tell yourself you'll try not to smoke the next day. Keep busy and every time you think about cigarettes give yourself a mental pat on the back. Try again next day, and the next and the next ... This sounds simplistic but it worked for me, and best of all you're doing it all by yourself, without any patches or gum. Most important, if you don't succeed, don't give up on giving up. One day it'll happen.
