I'd like to ask if any of you have done the journey to Barcelona by train or driving, and if so what was it like. Thanks in advance.

I haven't travelled all the way there by train, but have done Alicante to Barcelona by rail. A beautiful coastal journey in very clean comfortable trains. if you want to go from the UK to Barcelona by rail, start your search for info on http://www.seat61.com
if you've a strong constitution, calais to barcelona is driveable in 12-14 hours. the scenery is fantastic, particularly south of clermont-ferrand over the massif central (viaduc de millau is a highlight) and along the coast from beziers to perpignan. south of there the fastest road is away from the coast but takes you through the foothills of the pyrenees to girona, and then on to barcelona.
I have taken the train from Paris to Barcelona several times and it was an overnight trip as I did not want to lose any daytime hours. I do know that there is a high speed train that runs from Paris to Barcelona now and takes several hours less then the old regular train. I would certainly take the train rather then drive. What would you do with a car in Barcelona. You don't want to be driving around and the car would have to be parked. Most hotels do not have parking provided at the hotel.
