How do I underscore an email address please

I have been given the email address of an older person who is just learning the PC. She says her surname is underscored in the address. I don't seem to know how to do this. Can you help please/

She might mean there is an underscore after her surname:-

[email protected] for example

Or she might mean that it appears underscored in documents, because an e-mail address is a link, and many word processors automatically underline links.
e-mails addresses themselves are not underscored (except as described by TTG)
