Human Rights Act (EHCR) to be scrapped

Who was the politician recently who said that they intend either to modify or scrap this European Law? Now that we have a supreme court can we not make our own decisions based on the security of this country? In the short time of its existance how many terrorists has it allowed to go free in Britain?
Would anyone except the defence lawyers show any remorse in its demise?

The UK’s 1998 Human Rights Act is based around the European Convention on Human Rights, (ECHR) which was framed just after WW2.

There was no need to introduce the 1998 Act as all its provisions were already covered by the ECHR. But the UK Act did remove the need for those offended to seek redress through the European Courts.

Being a signatory to the ECHR is a requirement of membership of the EU. Since there is virtually no chance of the UK leaving that organisation the likelihood of us withdrawing from the ECHR is slim to say the least, and any politician who suggest otherwise is being economical with the truth.

David Cameron did propose scrapping this in 2008 but replace it with a bill of civil rights. I have heard no mention of it recently but surely it would be one of the most vote winning decisions?

Simply scrapping the 1998 UK Act will have little effect. We need also to withdraw as signatories to the ECHR, and as far as I can see nobody is proposing this. This is almost certainly for the reason I stated in my first post.

New Judge you may be probably right. But as in the past the conservatives are playing the EU close to their chests. It was the downfall of John Major and the last thing on Cameron's mind is to have a split party going into a winnable election. The brickbats are likely to start next year once elected and many think it will be top of the agenda. This time though the antagonists will have the support of the general population.

Its no coincidence why the tories wanted a referendum on the EU constitution. Many of them secretly want us out.

Yet the Tories are trading under a pro Europe stance. Are they lying to us before they have even got into office by any chance?
