In the early to mid 60's I went to a lot of pop concerts which were very enjoyable apart from not being able to hear the Beatles above the screaming. The best act I saw was Roy Orbison whose voice was fantastic. The one act I would have loved to have seen was Buddy Holly but, unfortunately I was a bit too young in 1957 to go and see him, and then he died in February 1959.
Who did you enjoy seeing on stage and who would you have liked to have seen but didn't?
I did see a lot of the big 70's bands in their heyday - including Queen as a support act (!), Bowie as Ziggy, Floyd five times, Lizzy ten times, Slade, Bob Marley, Zepelin twice, but I seriously regret not seeing either Free, who were at my local venue loads of times, or T. Rex. The Beatles I was too young to see, or the big O, and I would give a lot to have seen Little Richard in his pomp.
I agree with you about Little Richard, Andy, he would have been a great one to see. There were also some good comedians introducing the acts. My favourite was Dave Allen before his TV days, it's a shame he's no longer with us
Saw King Crimson in Leeds about 1970. Awesome.
Emmerson, Lake and Palmer in Hull. 1969 I think. Brilliant!
Missed seeing Hendrix at IOW festival. I was roadie for a local band and we had a gig in Newcastle that weekend.
You always think you'll catch them next time round until eventually there isn't a next time round and it's too late.
sachs - I also saw Zep at Knebworth - the first of their two shows there. Would love to have seen the second, as it was their final gig. I also saw them at Earls Court in 1975. Awesome.
The best concert I've ever seen is a close run thing between Madonna's 'Blonde Ambition' show at Wembley Stadium in 1990, and Ella Fitzgerald performing live for the last time in the UK at the Royal Albert Hall.
Both were pretty much jaw-dropping but (obviously) for entirely different reasons.
Would've loved to see Bowie's final Ziggy Stardust performance, but unfortunately, I was way too young (and didn't actually start appreciating the fella's 70's output until 2005!)
Hi andy,
I can't remember which one it was. Have you any pics? I have a couple, never thought to take one of ME! How big was that crowd, I remember it being absolutely scorching. I took pics of the crowd & one particularly 'fit' lad :0) I was nervous of leaving my place to go to the toilet wondering whether I'd find my way back, so I picked out a distinctive flag to make my way back to. We had a wonderful sunset on the horizon!
Apologies Supermike! Hello! Got carried away with your post. Would have loved to have seen T.Rex , Slade, The Who, Bowie, Free, Thin Lizzy ......... list is endless x
Hi Sachs, sorry, no pics, which i do regret. It was a scorching day, I remember my girlfriend wanting to go topless, but not doing it in case people thought she was shwoing off her figure. It was well worth showing off as well!
Speaking of Emerson Lake and Palmer - I am workjing with Carl on his autobiography, it's fascinating, and he has an incredible memory for details, which i deeply envy. He can remember more about me seeing him at Trentham Gardens than I can!
