Lachlan Maclean

I am trying to trace my maternal grandmother's brother, Lachlan Maclean. He was born in Kensalroag, Isle of Skye, in 1877. The latest reference I can find of him is in the 1901 census when he was 24. I just recently discovered the fate of another sibling, Isabella, who married in Glasgow in 1938 aged 65, her groom being 61 and a widower. I then found that he too had been born on Skye, and at the time of his first marriage, he also lived in Kensalroag. It appears that he and Isabella were neighbours from childhood.

I have been lucky enough to find 2nd cousins through my maternal grandmother as another brother of hers was their grandfather. We are all now particularly anxious to find Lachlan and complete the family.

In 1901 i assume he was single, the 1911 for Scotland is still not released, and so you need to look at what is available, mainly the Civil Registration index of marriage and death. Do you know if he did marry? have you any idea of any children he had? unless you search generally the GRO index for Scotland with some clues as to his marriage and children you are going to be struggling, In 1901 was he still in Kensalroag? it is possible there is a monumental inscription somewhere for him, do you know if any family members recall visiting his grave or attending his funeral?

Thank you for your speedy reply, Dot. Neither myself nor my 2nd cousins know anything at all about Lachlan, and although he was the brother of our respective grandparents, none of us knew of his existence until we started researching the family. I use Scotlands People a lot but haven't been able to find anything on Lachlan in any of the relevant categories, except the 1881, 1891 and 1901 census records. Considering Lachlan was my mother's uncle, I didn't know her mother had any siblings, and because I am now quite elderly myself, I have no family from whom to obtain information.

I know you are the site expert on Genealogy and I thought perhaps you might have an idea of somewhere I might try that I haven't already.

Have you looked at the Commonwealth War graves site? It would eliminate him as a casualty during WW1.

No wonder you are the site expert, Dot, I had never even considered that Lachlan might have served in the Forces.
However, I have checked both the names to which you directed me on the CGC but, unfortunately, neither is him.
I shall keep trying though, and have another attempt at finding whether or not he might have emigrated. I did go down this line before and although I didn't find Lachlan, I was lucky enough to find my husband's aunts and uncle going through Ellis Island.

i do think that it is worth considering that lachlan may have been a War casualty, mainly because you have no recollection of your family mentioning him. It may be worth enquiring with the local reference library in the town you last found him in, he may be commemorated on a memorial in a local kirk.

Again, thank you Dot, for your suggestions. I shall follow that line of enquiry. Last night I spent hours looking through passenger lists of emigrants, just in case.
