I have always been a UK resident but is it true that if I have not lived in the UK for a three year continuous period, my application to be a Police Officer will be rejected? From Sept' 2002 until August 2004, I worked on a rotational basis overseas for a multi-national company. The company has offices in the UK. Someone told me this is a new national standard but I can't see anything on the website.

Not a direct answer, but just to alert you to the fact that many forces are not even accepting applications for another 9 months at the earliest.  This includes Metropolitan and City.

Do you need to have lived in the UK for the 3 years prior to your application?  If so, this delay may help.  If it is just ANY continuous 3 year period, then you've done that surely.

Are you a UK citizen?  Do you hold a UK passport?

Andy, I think you'd be ok but try this site http://www.policeuk.com/ it is run to assist people in your position and all answers are normally from other candidates. good luck.
