Gas Fire inserts
2 Answers
My son is contemplating purchasing a cast-iron fire and surround.
The retailers confirm that the fire-surround can be used as a wood-burning/coal-burning fire.
However, my lad would like to use this as a gas-fire.
Does anyone know where he could purchase a gas-fire manifold, or even the correct term for the gas-fire insert :o)
Thanks.

No can do.
Gas fires have to be pukka designed to draw in the air and flue the exhaust gases properly. So one can't, as far as I know, just buy an insert with a gas burner attached to it.
Also any decent gas fire runs the hot, moist carbon- dioxide and monoxide laden air through a heat exchanger to extract some of the flue gases to bring the efficiency levels...

Gas fires have to be installing by a registered Gas Safe technician.

Sorry for the delay in getting back, buildersmate.
That's what I thought, but as he's never experienced the joys (?) or dealing with a 'real fire', he's been hoping that somewhere he could purchase some sort of sealed unit to fit snuggly into the grate of the fire surround.
I happen to think it is a splendid fire surround and that he should steel his nerve and enter into the joys of riddling, banking and venturing out into the cold night to get extra kindling from the shed.................like wot I had to do as a child :o)
