Is it lawful for an employer to deduct pay for a uniform, then force the employee to return said uniform at the end of the contract without compensation?

If they require you to wear a specific uniform, then they should provide it.
If you have to pay for it, it belongs to you and they cannot demand it back, if they do, send them an invoice for it.
Maybe they own the uniform and you were in effect renting it. Sounds unusual to me.
