Making Butter - what's an easy way to get the buttermilk out?

Yesterday I made butter for the first time and was highly thrilled with myself. It tastes glorious..

My question is, how can I get all the buttermilk out easily? It was a right rigmarole. Pressing it down with a spoon just seemed to smear the butter everywhere, when I used a muslin cloth it came throug the tiny holes in the cloth like spaghetti, and squeezing it with my hands was uber messy. Using a (probably wasteful) combination of the three I did end up getting hopefully all of it out, but there must be a better way! Anyone know it?

Interesting question, Cuppa, I goggled this and every recipe I looked at chickened out saying "separate the buttermilk off", but avoided mentioning your problem, just hinted at it.

Don't the commercial guys use a centrifuge? I don't know what you could use in its place - stick it in a spin dryer in several muslin bags?
