Naturally, at the moment, there are a lot of tin-shakers about for the poppy appeal - which in my opinion is one of the most worthy causes there is.

At lunchtime I took a stoll into town and can you imagine my surprise that not 20 yards from an ex-serviceman collecting for the poppy appeal somebody from the Cats Protection league waved a tin in my face?

Talk about having a complete lack of perspective.

Some people care more about their pets than compensating soldiers.

It is their choice. This is a democracy. The Cats people wouldn't bother if people didn't feed their tin.

Is it not allowed to give to any other charities for a fortnight before Poppy day?

How many more posts do we have to put up with where people attempt to demonstrate their overwhelming compassion by finding some obscure way to complain about other people not taking poppy day as seriously as they do?

We always get the odd post this time of year but this year it seems particularly prolific

Now it seems as we must clear the streets of all competing charities

Pehaps hair shirts in scarlet with "Haig fund" will be called for soon

I too think that the poppy appeal is a worthwhile cause, but we live in a competitive age, and if the the poppy appeal collector had put up his or her pitch first, I would have thought it rather insensitive for the Cats Protection League to set-up so close, or indeed vice-versa.

Incidentally isn't it against the law to rattle a tin in front of one's face, or harass one in any other way?

Yes it is they shouldn't be doing that - but some of these animal charity people are even more competetive carers that the poppy crew! And loopy with it

Lest we forget, cats have played an important role in our war efforts through history.

Since time immemorial, they have served as ship's cats where they kept the vessel's stores free from rodents and also acted as mascots and companions to the crew. They were especially important in wartime, when supplies could be short, and men were far from home for extended periods and welcomed feline companionship. Sadly, since 1975 the British Royal Navy has banned cats, and indeed all animals, from its ships.

Poppy collections have had enough out of me in the past. We havn't had a decent war since the Falklands.
I therefore see more deserving causes.

With virtually no 1st WWI casualties alive now and World WarII veterans disappearing fast, I fail to see the need for the whole poppy experience. Those were wars that protected us.

Recent 'heroes' get quite enough from the state in terms of compensation, disability payments from wars that we should keep our noses out of.
