Sore throat and sinuses after tooth extraction?

As many of you know, I had an impacted lower wisdom tooth removed on Tuesday morning.

I have now developed an incredibly sore throat and sinuses. I have read that upper tooth removal can cause sinus problems, but not seen anything about lower removal causing this and nothing about sort throats.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on and what I can do to stop it, bearing in mind I am already dosed up on Ibruprofen and Co-codamol?

bush....tough times that you are going through and it seems as though you have developed a superadded infection, either in the tooth socket or totally incidental to your tooth extraction and need to contact your GP re. antibiotics.

Indeed during extraction of the upper molars, a tooth can be pushed into the maxillary sinus, but this is indeed rare and in your case it was a lower tooth that was extracted.

They were closed when I posted yesterday, but I just called the hospital where I had the extraction and they said it isn't a usual side effect of this treatment and may be complete coincidence, or could be what they called 'referred pain' eg the pain I should feel in the extraction site has transferred to a different part of my body for some reason. The nurse said if the extraction site doesn't hurt its unlikely to be an infection but to go in on Monday if I'm still suffering.

I guess I'm just wondering if anyone else had this after surgery, what caused it, and how they solved it!

You probably caught the infection at the hospital!!

Yepp, I agree that if the extraction socket is not painful, then it is unlikely to be infected, however , referred pain form the tooth would not be referred to your throat......face and forehead maybe.....but throat.No.

Still feel that the throat pain is co incidental to your tooth extraction and still feel that a course of antibiotics would be appropriate.

update... i had a coincidental respiratory tract infection (which got a lot worse before it got better)

GP said the only possible linkage to the tooth extraction is that I may have caught it at the hospital - nice!
