My Alaskan Malamute has taken to howling the house down as soon as we go out without her. she has only started doing it since our other dog passed away a few months back, so we know its because she needs some company. We are looking for another friend for her but need some tips on how to stop the howling until then, it is driving the neighbours mad understandably. We have tried most of the usual tricks like leaving radios on but nothing is working and we can't always take her with us. Any advice will be gratefully recieved.

Thanks

try recording yourself and your family talking and play it while you're out so she thinks you're in another room and she won't get lonely.

or get her a big stuffed animal to play with.

I saw this problem on a pet programme, and what they did was start with leaving the dog alone with the door closed, and the owner in another room, for a few minutes. The dog probably won't cry if it's just for a short period,so,when you go back in make a fuss and give them a treat. The idea is to show the dog that you will return, and that if there is no crying,he will be rewarded.Obviously, you have to take this slowly, but the idea apparently,is to look at it from your poor wee dog's logic, when he can see you will definetely return,he will be happier.Hope this might help.
