When my son was a toddler, we flew abroad and were hiring a car so I wanted to take his car seat (didn't want to pay the extra to hire one plus you never know how good the hired ones are going to be!) I took it as checked-in baggage and wrapped it up in black bin liners and heavy duty tape. If you do that, put in couple of spare bags to use on the way home as you will have burst open the original ones! (Pack some tape as well!)
I also packed some beach towels in the seat as well to free up some space in the case - it's not easy to travel light with a wee one!
