Hi, i have a large collection of DVD's and my problem is that when im out and about i forget which ones i have or have'nt got, so what i need is a gadget that i can put all my dvd's in a list in alphabetical order so i can quickly see if i have them. I know my phone can list them but i need something that if i add to the list it will go in its alphabetical order, cant afford to spend much but if you know what im after then let me know, cheers, dd1

I use a Zire but it wasn't until I got it home that I found that it doesn't include a database program. However I realised that I could use the address book because most of the field names aren't displayed when looking at any of the entries, only when editing. And so I use the fields that are available to hold not just the DVD title but all the extra info that I want...

Microsoft Excel will do the trick.
When you add new ones hitting the 'alphabetical sort' button will insert the title in it's correct position. It also gives you a running tally of your DVD's.
Not quite sure how you would transfer the info, though...........
A palm-pilot might be the thing for you.

jack...i already have them on works on my computer, just thought there was some small gadget i could take around with me, ill check out that one ...palm pilot..see what that does, cheers
Create an alphabetical list in excel etc. Print list (double sided and smallest font that you can read) and carry around in pocket. When you buy new dvd's write title etc on bottom of list. When you have run out of space or when it gets tatty update list on computer and re-print. Cost will be negligible compared to a palm top etc and if you lose list you can print a new one.

I suggest that you buy a small alphabetical note book. Click on link bellow.

I use a Zire but it wasn't until I got it home that I found that it doesn't include a database program. However I realised that I could use the address book because most of the field names aren't displayed when looking at any of the entries, only when editing. And so I use the fields that are available to hold not just the DVD title but all the extra info that I want (e.g. cast, director, dvd extras ...)

By using the surname field to hold the title, then all entries are automatically displayed in alphabetical order, plus I can search for information held within the records (e.g. film genre) and the search results are also in alphabetical order.
remember reading a couple of years ago, a system called SoonR where you could access your home computer from mobile phone, would this be what you want ?
I think you are all reading too much into this with your answers about equipment. The guy states quite clearly he wants the info when he's out & about, hence my suggestion re. a small paper notebook, I have one with all my DVDs written in it in alphabetical order, no problem.
The reply I gave is about a Zire palmtop which fits easily into a pocket and so can readily be used when out & about.

thanks to all for your answers, i didnt realise it woulda been so much of a problem. The small electronic things that have been suggested are what im looking for, the idea of a notebook is limited as i also sell some of the dvd's now and then so thos would incurr a lot of scribbling out plus i think theres over 150 entries for the letter s alone, and to the lad that suggested i had asked a silly question then no i dont think i have , cheers to all ,dd1
If I had known that you had over 4000 titles in your collection I don't think I would have suggested the idea of a printed list. You should have said that your 'large' collection was in excess of 4000. To most people a collection of 100+ is considered large.
In excel you should be able to get 200 titles on to one side (in columns) and it will still be legible when printed.

If you print on both sides of the page you will use 20 sides (10 pieces of paper) to list 4000 titles.

This amount is easy to fold and carry around in a pocket and you can scribble purchases and sales as and when they occur.

You can update/reprint the master as and when it suits you.
