odd noise coming from laptop..?
hi all,
my acer laptop, 5 months old, has started to make a bit of a noise underneath when its on.
its like a continual purring/rumbling/vibration noise, faint, but annoying,
any ideas please? and can i do anything to stop it?
thanks

find the air vent on the side of the laptop and see if the noise corresponds with when you can feel air being blown out the vent, if it does then fan for sure.
it may just need a clean out, you could try sticking a hoover pipe over the fan inlet on the bottom of the machine and see if you can suck it out (ooo err!)
if it's not that, well lets just say I hope it is, as hard drive is all that's left if it's not!

hoovering the fluff out (i did type fluff!) might help a bit, but if it's really noisy then it is possible that the fans bearings are shot in which case a new fan is the only option, a cheap part, a tricky job to do though! (but I wouldn't expect this on a 5 month old laptop)
download this
http://www.cpuid.com/...Monitor_115_setup.exe
install it and it will show you what the fan speed is when you run it, just leave it running in the background and check it when the noise starts, you should soon be able to tell if it's the fan.
