Like rammers I also use a 'trust sony' with an even trustier SM57 mic for professional recordings for my website. Though be sure to pick a microphone that'll give you good results. A stereo mic captures sound with more realism than a mono mic. The wider the mic's frequency response, the more accurate the recording, but that all depends on what you want to record exactly. And no matter which mic you choose, make sure it has a minijack plug, so it'll work with your recorder. In terms of MiniDisc's recorders I think sony is looking pretty popular, but there are many cheaper and just as good alternatives out there!
From Bournemouth university - a hint. If you are recording a voice, which is mono source, you need only record in mono. Unless you are recording two voices of course. Recording with a mono microphone and setting the minidisc to mono record will give you twice as much recording time. The mic power in refers to a powered microphone eg an electret which runs off a small internal battery or a double A. The drawback with minidisc recorders is that they are too damn small for daily recording, if you are gung-ho about recording mono/diologue, go for a portable DAT recorder and use a Sennheiser evolution series microphone. Job's a good un.
