It is all confusing but best to just find out what sort of cars are abailable to u and find one u like and then ask us about it on here so we can all help u by saying what it does and is like
Most of the letters are references to the spec' or the equipment level of the car
TDI stands for 'Turbo Diesel Intercooler' (Not injectio as all diesels are injected engines)
L stands for 'Lux' as in Luxury
GL stands for 'Grand Lux' as above bit a bit better
GTI stands for 'Grand Tourer Injected'
Cockney_si is mostly right about V Tec. It stands for Variable Timing and Lift Electronic Control System. V tec is also used on other makes (althoug I think Honda were first), on some models of car instead of it giving lots more power it improves fuel economy.
TDI does stand for 'Turbo Direct Injection'
The air that is drawn into the cylider is slightly compressed by the turbo charger. This has the effect of more air being packed in, which allows for a more powerful combustion when the diesel is directly injected at the 4th stroke, to explain it briefly.
TURBO compressed air when heated up = powerful combustion of DIRECT INJECTION of fuel, hence TURBO DIRECT INJECTION.
Thats the technical side, but when buying a TD or TDI alls you really need to know is that it's a diesel car with the advantage of a turbo.
GTI derives from Gran Turismo Iniezione (Grand Touring Injected when roughly translated)
hope this helps
