Question for the smokers. I mentioned the smell in my reply to Ortere below, what I don't understand is that smokers must know they smell and yet seem to not be bothered, I mean if someone told you you have BO you'd do something about right? I mean at work I sometimes encounter a pretty girl in a lift and I almost have to hold my breath, perfume and smoke, what a turn off! (just an example feminists, the blokes stink also) So whats the position? do you accept that you smell and that's it? Do you not believe that you smell because you cannot smell it yourself? Just curious.

Although I can't smell it myself (because I'm so used to it) I do know other people can smell it on me, as I am regularly told by one person in particular at work who is very anti-smoking. I suppose for me, I just accept the fact that yes it does smell and I do my best to try and disguise it (although maybe that makes me just smell worse). It's not like you get pleasure in the fact that you smell but in my case I have just accepted that the smell is part of what comes with smoking.
I smoke and I suppose I smell too, but all my loved ones smoke as well, so we all smell together and no-one minds.  Although I must admit that when smoking was allowed on buses, I hated it.  The smell of all the smoke just made me sick.   Unless I was going on a long journey I never smoked on public transport.
I am an ex-smoker and I think that there are lots of things that make people smell.  When my brother was working as a painter he always smelt of paint and turps and when another brother was training to be a chef he often smelled of things like garlic.  It's just that smokers have become the people it's ok to be rude to and about and make a social pariah.  You wouldn't dream of saying to the mother of a young baby, "EEEEWWWW you smell of sick!"  But people think nothing of saying "EEEEWWWWW your a dirthy smelly smoker!"  I personally don't mind the smell of smoke on people especially if it's fresh and I really love the smell of cigarette smoke.

I'm a smoker and couldn't give a t*ss whether you thought I smelt of smoke or not.

I am an ex smoker I gave up 5 weeks ago, My partner is a non smoker, and he always use to say " You just had a fag? It stinks. I honestly thought that it as not that bad he just wants me to give up!!

Now I smell smoke on other people and think!! Oh my god I used to smell like that!! How did my partner put up with it?

Sorry also I would never have gave up if it had not of been for falling pregnant.
Hi loosehead, I can appreciate what you are saying but I don't think anybody can smell themselves, if you know what I mean.  Some people's aftershave or perfumes are overpowering on the train in the morning.  The smell of garlic on somebody, from the night before, is also horrible, on somebody else, but I've never noticed it on myself although I eat a fair bit.  I wonder why some people come to work smelling of stale sweat but they don't seem to notice, so I would say that we can't always smell our own odours, good job too:)
LoL - some great answers. I love the smell of fresh smoke, hate the smell of stale smoke, I also hate the smell of Red Bull, Cabbage, orange soap and geraniums. I have to serve people red bull in the pub, but don't think any worse of them for drinking it.  As others have said, it comes with the territory and as we get constant grief for smoking, it's kinda water off a ducks back.

Bottom, I'm with you!  When I stopped smoking and started to smell it on others, I was HORRIFIED that that's what I smelled like...not so much the clothes, but the BREATH.......UGH!  My hubby still smokes socially and like FRIFFIC I love the smell of someone smoking, but not after it has become stale...YUCK.

Englishbird, geraniums have a smell???  I have them potted on my deck/patio and I don't smell anything....

You can tell when people smoke when you walk past them in the street and you don't even know them, but it doesn't bother me. It doesn't smell nice, but it's up to them, not us. Probably half the people in the world don't like my perfume, but they don't stop me in the street and say I stink horrible, so why should I do it to anyone else?

The only thing I hate about smokers - and it's only a very small minority of them - is the ones that purposely wave their fags under your nose or blow smoke in your face because they couldn't give a damn whether you like it or not.

I also agree that garlic stinks so bad the next day to the person who hasn't had it - and it does stink worse than smoke because it's so penetrating and everlasting!

I always feel sad when I remember the way my Mum(a heavy smoker) smelled when I was a child. I was so envious of other peoples Mums who smelt of laundry & soap...while  mine made me feel physically sick to be anywhere near.

Our house stank & I was ashamed to invite friends home as they would also go home stinking of fags. the main thing her smoking ruined was our closeness, who wants to cuddle up to someone whos skin, hair & clothes stink like an ashtray.

Strangely enough...I'm not a smoker!

geraniums definately smell! my mum used to keep one in the kitchen.  I don't think they're particularly pungent.
