Does anyone know why there is no EV thread on answerbank this week?

Did everyone find it so easy?

I have most of the phrase and an inkling what needs to be removed from the twelve answers but I was hoping to get a hint on an answer to help me on my way.

Any help on 1d (which should be relatively easy) would be appreciated:

A variety of meats makes flan (5) - The definition may have a misprinted letter. All I have is that the last letter is "S"

No idea why there's no thread, Aloysius535, though many of the usual suspects indicated last week they might be away. Certainly not an easy one. I thought 1d was an anagram of "meats", and the last letter of the clue was a misprint and should have been T. Wasn't one of the better clues.

I thought the clue was ok in keeping with the theme. Tougher than usual this week. I found page 1850 of Chambers helpful.

I actually got this one five minutes after typing the question and have now got the quote and most of the answers. Thanks for your help

Have just got chance to post. Thought it was more of a challenge this week but had a slight advantage as a linguist.
The answer length for 15 ac should be 10 ( before thematic adjustment ) rather than 9 as printed.

Well done for starting the thread this week Aloysius! I agree with Novalis on 15ac. I, too, thought it was a little more tricky although it all came together quite quickly in the end. I hope the missing usual suspects are having a wonderful time while we enjoy the beauties of the wet wonderland that is Yorkshire.

I think the reason for no earlier thread is holiday of DocHH who is usually very good at starting it off. I, actually enjoyed this and felt very virtuous at the conclusion! Devadolly, I do hope the floods aren't affecting you....they look so awful. Christiana, congrats for the Speccie win.

Just thought I would tell you copelander - rain (the 12" that is) by-passed us by about 20 miles, still had horrendous rain & gales but left with nothing more than soggy fields and mud everywhere. Big help operation going on locally but Windermere is still rising and there seems no let up for them. A lot of tractors/trailers and loaders being put to strange uses up there - not going to be much of a Christmas for a lot of families.

It sounds a dreadful time, Devadolly, glad that you were not in the direct path. As it continues to rain steadily down on us (we live on the Ribble) we worry about what is happening to the west. It is only a month or so since we were last out on your hills and we took the train around the coast through Workington for the first time - a lovely trip. It is sad to see the pictures coming out of the area - and incredibly inspiring to see how people cope with what seems to be insurmountable odds.

Hi Jogler, we are next one up! Right between Lune and Morecambe Bay, about 400yds to each in opposite directions! Used to be the sea that 'got' M every huge tide but the sea wall work that was done some 20 years ago has stopped that. I imagine the people of M are remembering only too well........................................ Our house was built in 1400 and something on the high ground next to what was marsh and is now reclaimed (200 years ago) land so it should be fairly safe, otherwise it's off to the attic!

Fingers crossed Dd. Make sure you take the dc to the attic! We spend quite a bit of time on Carnforth railway platform waiting for trains, the walks around MB are always lovely. Incidentally, if we sound like a slightly split personality it is because we are a bogof. Him outdoors (the HG) is the crossword fiend, whilst I am the internet junky (though I pride myself on coming up with the themes and the occasional answer). As he is currently out hunter gathering I get to answer this one all by myself!

Pleased that you weren't in the direct path of the Noah-like deluge. It is so sad for those who were. That, and the very sad news I've had of the sudden death of one of my team of examiners, certainly puts our weekly struggles with EV into stark perspective.

Hi all
Am only just getting round to looking at EV this week. Got the idea about the entries and grid roughly half populated. My in-laws used to own a caravan that was based at Glasson Bay, DD, so am quite familiar with that area. Also with Carnforth, as my other half is a railway anorak. Here in Cheshire the weather is not quite as bad as in the Lakes but still very wet. Sounds as if you had a bit of a shock novalis. Sorry to here that.
