N ? D ? Y - is it noddy or neddy or something different as I can't justify
2d) Move quickly when surprised in opening (5) S ? A ? T - is it start? Again can't justify.

I assume START is the openeing of STARTLED (surprised)
START can mean to move quickly
2d) Almost certainly 'START'.
To START is to OPEN.
If you receive a shock you might jump with surprise - this jump is known as a START.

55a) No idea. A US city is New York (NY) which gives the 1st and last letters.
I would assume ODD as in 'odds and ends' means left over / remaining.
Noddy od an old word for a fool
Further to earlier answer, I think it most be NODDY. The NY is as I said, the 'ODD' could be 'remaining'. But this would leave 'Noddy' meaning 'Old fool' which I haven't heard of
