there is fAR to little information to give a sensible answer
1) you don't know what the charge is (if indeed there is any charge)
2) you don't state what injuries the man has
3) you don't state whether your father would intend to plead guilty or not guilty

it would be pointless putting the wind up you by telling you what could happen until you know the above

If he is being charged with GBH with intent, and he previous violent criminal convictions then he may be in quite a lot of trouble. The reason being that he has not learnt his lesson from the previous punishment the police layed down on him. It is possible to go to prison with this offence
As mentioned before there isn't enough info here but the age difference isn't likely to be a factor either way. If your dad was charged with GBH with intent (rather than just GBH, or ABH) then it can be a serious matter but it really depends on the specific details of the incident.

If the victim does "drop the charges" it doesn't mean your dad will not be prosecuted, especially for such a serious type of assault. The decision whether or not to charge is down to the CPS ultimately, not the victim.
